PROMISE OF MARRIAGEAbstract
The betrothal or promise of marriage is not an anachronistic institution, for it was reformed by the Law of 1981. It is a juristic act preliminary to marriage, and it is bilateral, because when a promise of marriage is accepted, it ceases to be unilateral and becomes reciprocal. Whereas the accord does not produce any obligation to marry, it is logical and in accordance with the rule of redress that breach of promise should produce the duty to indemnify the other party for the expenses that party has already paid toward the promised marriage and the contracted obligations.
